Welcome to the Knoxville BirthNetwork!
We believe:
- Birth is a normal, healthy process, not an illness or a disease
- Empowering births can take place in hospitals, birth centers, and homes
- Maternity care should be evidence-based and woman-centered
- Women are entitled to accurate and complete information on their full range of options for pregnancy, birth, postpartum and breastfeeding
- Women have a right to make healthcare decisions for themselves and their babies. That includes informed consent as well as informed refusal
We support the Mother-Friendly Childbirth Initiative
The MFCI is the work of the Coalition for Improving Maternity Services (CIMS). Their mission is to provide a wellness model of maternity care that will improve birth outcomes and reduce costs. This coalition of individuals and organizations work with the birth and breastfeeding communities to promote the MFCI, which is the first and only consensus document on U.S. Maternity Care.
You can read the CIMS document that explains the ten steps of the Mother Friendly Childbirth Initiative here. We think this is an important read for all childbirth professionals, advocates, and families.
