There has been a lot of media talk lately about placenta encapsulation and benefits. Some people may think, "Why in the world would you want to do that?" Well, let me tell you some of the amazing things your placenta can do for you!
First off, you probably wonder what is placenta encapsulation. This is the process of taking a fresh placenta, processing it by either preparing it raw or steamed, then dehydrating it, grinding it into a powder, and then putting the powder into a capsule. There are varying reasons as to which way you would want it prepared either raw or steamed. Steamed is a traditional Chinese method. In Chinese culture once a mom gives birth she has some empty space (where baby was) and that's considered cold space. They want to warm that space by putting warm things in to help balance out your Qi. Some placenta specialists will only do one specific method or both. You would need to discuss with them which one would be right for you. The raw method is just that, getting the raw placenta and then slicing it up and dehydrating it up to grind into a powder for putting into pills.
So now for the benefits. Most people who have done some research on placenta encapsulation are familiar with a couple of the benefits. Those would be helping keep postpartum depression away and to help with milk supply. These are just a few of the benefits you can get. There is also getting b vitamins to help with your energy level (who doesn't need that after labor), replenishing iron lost during birth, giving you back some of that wonderful oxytocin, giving back HPL hormone which helps stabilize hormones or baby blues, help offer natural pain relief from birth, and help protect from infection when there is retained placenta. These of course are all things that encapsulation can possibly do for you. There is ongoing research into the human placenta and its perceived benefits, but we haven't quite reached the level of research to be approved by the FDA. Here is an article that talks about the link between low iron and postpartum depression: jn.nutrition.org/content/133/12/4139.full And this is just one reason why getting that iron supply replenished can help.
I truly believe that there is something special about what our placentas can give back to us. Most mammals eat their placentas after birth so it would stand to reason that there is some sort of benefit. We have a little bit more palatable way of doing it by doing encapsulation. So take a look and maybe consider talking to a local placenta encapsulator or even a friend that might have had hers done. You might just be amazed at their experience.
