Another valuable option in the Knoxville area is assisted home birth. These deliveries are attended by Certified Professional Midwives (CPM's) who are licensed by the state of Tennessee and specialize in low risk, out-of-hospital delivery. Within this holistic model of family centered care, parents are both empowered and encouraged thoughout the prenatal period to participate in the decision making that will frame their unique birth experiences.
Home birth midwives spend an average of an hour with their clients at each prenatal visit. This provides an opportunity to attain all of the clinical information necessary to assess general health and wellness and still have plenty of time for answering questions and catching up. One on one care and relationship building during the prenatal period brings about a trust and friendship which will serve the birthing process well. Home birth midwives take a personal interest in making each woman's pregnancy, birth, and postpartum the best it can be, so their own personal caseloads are often kept small.
Parents are well prepared, taking a proactive role in personal health, wellness, and education. By 36 weeks of pregnancy, they have their birth kit and supplies in order. Their midwife has provided them with a concise list of what is needed, and together they review these items at their home visit. When the big day arrives, the laboring woman has freedom to move about freely, snack, and try various coping techniques. Often, two or more care providers monitor the progress of her labor and the well being of both she and her baby. Providing calm, watchful and intimate care, the midwives are with the family for the entire duration of labor and birth. If the need were to arise, the CPM is trained in a variety of emergency care procedures including identifying and referring women who need obstetrical attention.
After delivery, the team will remain until both mom and baby are stable and tucked into bed for some much deserved rest. Parents can expect a home visit at 24 hours and often subsequent postpartum visits to address healing, feeding, and newborn care.
For more information on having a home delivery, it is best to meet with several of the home birth midwives in the community. Each will have their own unique personality and style of care. Referrals from local home birthing families will also be helpful. Above all, each parent should trust their instincts in choosing the provider with which they feel most comfortable and who will help to guide them though their options toward empowerment and fully informed decision making.
